Entrepreneurship in the Panhandle

Posted on February 23, 2012

Some people mature into entrepreneurs and business leaders. Others, like Amarillo, Texas, native Joe Batson, seem as if they were born with leadership and business abilities. While still in college at The University of Texas at Austin, he created and produced a film, A Journey Through Time, for the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He also served as a youth advisor and Campaign Coordinator for Lyndon B. Johnson’s re-election campaign and as a 31st District committee member for the State of Texas to the National Democratic Convention. In these capacities, Joe Batson collaborated directly with the White House and became a trustee for the grandchildren of President Johnson.

In addition to his early achievements, he purchased advertising agency Monte Rosenwald and Associates and founded Berneta Communications Inc., named after his beloved grandmother, Berneta Bivins. He won local, regional, and national awards. Mr. Batson’s other accomplishments include the purchase of a bank and service as Chairman of the Board, building on more than 40 years in increasingly responsible positions at Coldwater Cattle Company, a family business in Amarillo. He has also held executive positions in the family oil business for more than 20 years. Pursuing a varied career, the entrepreneur also held roles as a cowboy and company pilot.

Recognizing the role that his heritage played in his business success, Mr. Batson co-founded the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation, which presents the outdoor musical drama “Texas” each year from June through August. Also a co-founder and board member of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at The University of Texas at Austin, he supports business and research efforts, as well. The business leader serves on the board of the Potter County Industrial Development Corporation and on the Research Council of The Scripps Research Institute. A well-regarded businessman, Joe Batson has demonstrated a lifetime of achievements and service.
